The Design of Synchronization Mechanisms for Peer-to-Peer Massively Multiplayer Games

چکیده
Massively multiplayer online games (MMG) are natural applications for peer-to-peer overlays (P2P). However, the absence of synchronization among the peers significantly limits games’ functionality and quality of service. Synchronization in P2P overlays faces problems including scalability, heterogeneous network latency and bandwidth, and non-collaborative participants. We believe these problems can be solved in the context of games, by relaxing the consistency requirements based on application semantics. This paper discusses two synchronization mechanisms that can potentially both achieve scalability in the P2P environment and observe real time requirements in massively multiplayer games.

Design issues for Peer-to-Peer Massively Multiplayer Online Games
Massively Multiplayer Online Games (MMOGs) are increasing in both popularity and scale, and while classical Client/Server architectures convey some benefits, they suffer from significant technical and commercial drawbacks. This realisation has sparked intensive research interest in adapting MMOGs to Peer-to-Peer (P2P)

Massively Multiplayer Online Games (MMOGs) are increasing in both popularity and scale on the Internet and are predominantly implemented by Client/Server architectures. While such a classical approach to distributed system design offers many benefits, it suffers from significant technical and commercial drawbacks, primarily reliability and scalability costs. This realisation has sparked recent ...

In this theses we present the design and implementation of three different network services for massively multiplayer online games. The first service is an approach for an integrated voice communication. The design is based on a hybrid architecture using a server-based signaling and peer-to-peer data transmission. This technique allows to relate speech processing to game events throuhgt the ser...

One of the most attractive features of Massively Multiplayer Online Games (MMOGs) is the possibility for users to interact with a large number of other users in a variety of collaborative and competitive situations. Gamers within an MMOG typically become members of active communities with mutual interests, shared adventures, and common objectives. We present the EU funded Community Network Game...

Massively Multiplayer Online Games (MMOGs) gradually become one of the most popular internet applications. Traditional client-server architecture is widely used in MMOGs’ deployment, but its scalability and maintenance are limited mostly by servers. Peer-to-Peer (P2P) architecture, which attempts to make use of computer resources from the computers in the network, is considered to be a candidat...
